There’s good news for patients facing surgery to relieve back pain due to degenerative disc disease—back pain originating in the disc with degeneration of the disc confirmed by history and radiographic studies.
The Silver Spine & Neurological Center in the Mckinney, Allen and Frisco area now offers an innovative 3-D printed implant for use during lumbar interbody fusion, a surgical procedure performed to help reduce lower back pain by joining two adjacent vertebrae so that there is very little movement between them.
Spine Neurosurgeons are now using the new Tritanium® Posterior Lumbar Cage from Stryker’s Spine division, a hollow rectangular implant that is manufactured using a modern additive manufacturing technology, also known as 3-D printing. During spinal fusion surgery, the cage and a bone graft are placed in the disc space to help restore and maintain normal spacing between the vertebrae and, along with supplemental fixation, stabilize the spine while the bones grow together. The cages are constructed out of highly porous titanium material designed for bone in-growth and biological fixation.
“Low back pain and degenerative disc disease are serious problems for many patients, ” said M. Viktor Silver, M.D., of Silver Spine & Neurological Center. “Our comprehensive spine program is designed to help patients find treatment options that are right for them. We are pleased to offer innovative new technologies such as the Tritanium PL Cage. The highly porous structure of Tritanium, made possible by a unique 3-D additive manufacturing process, is designed for bone in-growth and biological fixation.”
The Tritanium PL Cage received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration in November 2015 for use in skeletally mature patients with degenerative disc disease, Grade I spondylolisthesis, and degenerative scoliosis.
